UD women’s basketball wins tournament title

10:08 a.m., Dec. 1, 2003--The University of Delaware women’s basketball team won the Coca-Cola Classic tournament championship by defeating Fairfield University 61-51 in overtime on Sunday afternoon at The Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn.

Junior Tiffany Young scored a career-high 20 points, including six in the overtime period, to lead the Fightin’ Blue Hens.

UD junior forward Tiara Malcom, who earned Tournament Most Valuable Player honors, chipped in with 14 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, and junior guard Julie Sailer added nine points and eight rebounds for the Hens (3-1), who captured their second regular season tournament title in as many seasons. Last year, UD downed the University of Alabama Birmingham and Dartmouth University to win the Dartmouth Tournament in Hanover, N.H.

Both Malcom and Young earned spots on the Coca-Cola Classic All-Tournament Team.

In the first game of the tournament, UD defeated Brown University 60-47.

“We're playing five new players and more than half of our kids are new, so every win we get is a gutty one,” UD Head Coach Tina Martin said. “In the end, our kids were able to step up and make plays, and we came away with the win.”

Fairfield (1-3) was led by Schrene Isidora, who scored 13 points and had three assists. Candice Lindsey added 11 points and five rebounds, and Cathy Dash had seven points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Delaware took a 51-49 lead with 23 seconds left in the contest on free throws by Malcom and senior Tracey Howell, but Isidora converted a lay-up out of a timeout with three seconds left to send the game to overtime.

Young took over from there, making a lay-up at 4:37 to open the scoring in overtime and later hit on all four of her free throw attempts as the Hens blanked Fairfield in the overtime period.

UD will return home for a pair of games at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center. The Hens will tip-off against LaSalle University at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 3, and against the U.S. Naval Academy at 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 5.
