UD women’s basketball falls to Richmond in OT

9:33 a.m., Nov. 24, 2003--The University of Delaware women’s basketball team saw its eight-game home winning streak come to an end in an 80-78 overtime loss to the University of Richmond on Friday night at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens will return to action at Stony Brook (N.Y.) University at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 25.

Against Richmond, the Hens (0-1) had four scorers in double figures, led by Tiara Malcom who had 24 points and seven rebounds. Julie Sailer scored 16 points while freshman Liz Hayes added 12 points in her collegiate debut.

UD senior Tiffany Young added career-highs with 11 points and eight rebounds in her first career start, and Tracey Howell pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

UD led by as many as 14 points in the opening half before a late Richmond rally cut the UD lead to 35-25 at intermission. Richmond fought back in the second half, tying the score three times in the first 10 minutes before taking its first second-half lead at 51-50.

The Spiders extended the lead to 61-57 but Howell followed with two free throws and Malcom converted a layup with two minutes left to knot the score at 61-61.

After Richmond again gained a three-point advantage, the Hens rallied to send the game into overtime as Hayes nailed a three-pointer with six seconds remaining in regulation.

Richmond, which advanced to the third round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament a year ago when it posted a 21-11 record, never trailed in the extra session.
