UD women’s basketball edges Turkish national team

11:25 a.m., Nov. 5, 2003--University of Delaware junior guard Julie Sailer scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Fightin’ Blue Hens to a 60-56 exhibition victory over the Turkish national team on Tuesday night at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

Sailer, one of three returning starters from last year's squad that went 23-6 and shared the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title with Old Dominion University, secured the victory by sinking two free throws with three seconds left.

UD, coming off four straight 20-win seasons and three straight postseason appearances, rallied from an early deficit to post the victory. The Hens will open the 2003-04 regular season on Friday, Nov. 21, at home against the University of Richmond.

Sailer was the only UD player in double figures, but Tiara Malcom added eight points and 10 rebounds and Tracey Howell chipped in with seven points and 10 rebounds.

Delaware held a 35-29 rebounding advantage and took advantage of 24 turnovers and 29 personal fouls by the Turkish team.

"We showed we were very young, but our kids showed confidence when they needed to," UD Head Coach Tina Martin said. "I thought they did a great job. We threw our freshmen out there and let them get their feet wet."

The Turkish national team was led by forward Saziye Ivegin, who scored 18 points and nailed four three-pointers, including one with 1:23 left to play that tied the score at 53-53.

After trailing by as many as 12 points in the first half, UD rallied and pulled to within 27-26 at halftime. The Hens took the lead at 32-31 on a layup by Tiffany Young just three minutes into the second half and held the lead until the final minutes.

The Turkish team pulled close several times during the second half, cutting the lead to just one point twice, at 37-36 with 13:01 left and at 40-39 with 10:47 remaining. The Hens increased their lead to eight points at 51-43 with 3:57 remaining but again Turkey came back as Ivegin hit a three-pointer with 2:19 left to cut the lead to 53-50 and another one 1:06 later to tie the game.

But Delaware took over from there as Kristy Gaines hit a jumper and freshman Liz Hayes hit a big three-pointer with 18 seconds left for a 58-53 lead.

Turkey's Arzue Ozyigit hit a lay-up and followed with a free throw with six seconds left to cut the lead to 58-56 but Sailer followed with two free throws to secure the victory for the Hens.
