UD women’s basketball advances to CAA semifinals

Tiara Malcom scored 19 points in the victory over UNC Wilmington.
10:12 a.m., March 12, 2004--The University of Delaware women’s basketball team won its quarterfinal game in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament and has advanced to meet top-seeded Old Dominion University at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 12, in the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Va.

The fourth-seeded Fightin’ Blue Hens defeated the University of North Carolina Wilmington 65-59 on Thursday evening to reach the conference semifinals.

Old Dominion defeated the College of William & Mary 82-56 to advance.

The Hens lost twice to Old Dominion this season, falling 67-56 at home on Jan. 11 and 70-57 at the Ted Constant Center on Feb. 20.

In Thursday’s victory over UNC Wilmington, UD junior forward Tiara Malcom led the Hens with 19 points. Junior forward Tiffany Young and freshman guard Alena Koshansky both scored 11 points, with Koshansky hitting three three-point baskets, and freshman guard Tyresa Smith added nine points and five assists.

It was the fifth consecutive win for UD, which improved to 19-9 on the season.

“I thought our kids played very well. I am proud of them and we held our composure," UD Head Coach Tina Martin said. “We've grown up a lot over the past seven games this season and we've really matured as a team. These kids have stepped up and taken some great shots.”

UNC Wilmington's Cherie Lea, a first team All-CAA selection, scored the first points of the game to give the Seahawks their only lead at 2-0.

UD built an early 10-4 lead following consecutive three-point shots by Koshansky and took a 31-24 advantage into halftime.

Smith scored the first seven points of the second half for the Hens, who opened up a 10-point lead at 48-38 on a three-point field goal by freshman guard Liz Hayes.

UNC Wilmington cut the lead to six at 60-54 with 1:19 left but the Hens hit five of six free throws down the stretch to seal with win.
