UD women’s basketball defeats George Mason

Tracey Howell had nine rebounds in her final regular season game as a Blue Hen.
10:30 a.m., March 5, 2004--The University of Delaware women’s basketball team clinched the No. 4 seed in next week’s Colonial Athletic Association tournament with a 67-58 victory over George Mason University on Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens ended the regular season with a record of 18-9 overall and 10-8 in the CAA.

They will open conference tournament play against either Virginia Commonwealth University or the University of North Carolina Wilmington on Thursday, March 11, at the Ted Constant Convocation Center on the campus of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.

In the victory over George Mason, UD freshman guard Tyresa Smith led four scorers in double figures with a career-high 16 points. Tiara Malcom and Tiffany Young both scored 12 points and Liz Hayes scored 11.

When Malcom hit a jumper with 17:21 left in the first half, it put her over 1,000 points for her career. She is just the 19th player in school history to reach that mark.

Senior Tracey Howell, playing in her final regular season game as a Hen, had nine rebounds.

Forward Vernessa Neamo led George Mason with 14 points and guard Jen Derevjanik added 13.

UD jumped out to a big lead early and never relinquished it, going up by 19 points with 5:17 left in the first half on consecutive three-point baskets by Hayes that capped a 9-0 run.

George Mason outscored the Hens 11-2 over the final 3:29 to cut the UD halftime advantage to 37-27.

George Mason cut the lead to five at 48-43 with 12:09 left in the game, but UD’s Amanda Blackstone and Hayes followed with three-pointers to restore an 11-point lead.

George Mason got to within five points several times but could never get any closer.
