UD women’s basketball tops Hofstra, snaps streak

Tiara Malcom led the Hens with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
11:25 a.m., Feb. 16, 2004--The University of Delaware women's basketball team ended its four-game losing streak with a 67-41 Colonial Athletic Association victory at Hofstra University on Sunday afternoon.

Tiara Malcom scored 25 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the Fightin’ Blue Hens, who held Hofstra to just 17 points in the second half.

With the victory, UD improved to 14-8 overall and 6-7 in the CAA.

The Hens will travel to Old Dominion University for a game against the conference leaders at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 20.

Against Hofstra, UD sophomore Amanda Blackstone scored 14 points in her first start. Freshman Alena Koshansky scored 11 points, freshman guard Tyresa Smith had nine points, seven rebounds and four assists, and Tiffany Young came off the bench to add eight points and nine rebounds.

Hofstra, which entered the game in sole possession of second place in the CAA standings, struggled all afternoon and dropped its second straight game. The Pride fell to 12-10 overall and 9-4 in the CAA.

No Hofstra players scored more than eight points and the five starters combined for just 20 points. Shalamar Oakley came off the bench to score eight points while reserve Vanessa Gidden contributed seven points and six rebounds.

Each of Hofstra’s four conference losses have been by 26 points or more, including a 78-47 setback to Delaware back on Jan. 15 when Malcom scored a game-high 18 points. Hofstra was coming off a 105-62 setback to league-leading Old Dominion Thursday night.

Except for two ties in the first five minutes of the game, UD led from start to finish. After Cigi McCollin connected on a three-pointer to tie the game at 8-8, the Hens followed with an 8-0 run as Malcom and Young each scored two baskets.

UD led by as many as 10 points in the first half before settling for a 33-24 advantage at the break.

The Hens left little doubt of the outcome in the second half, outscoring the Pride 10-4 in the opening four minutes to extend the lead to 43-28 with 15:48 remaining.

UD held Hofstra to just three points over the final six minutes of the game and scoreless for the final four minutes and 20 seconds as they built the lead to more than 20 points.
