UD women’s basketball will host JMU Feb. 12

Junior forward Tiffany Young scored 16 points in the loss to William & Mary.
1:12 p.m., Feb. 9, 2004--The University of Delaware women’s basketball team fell 55-48 in a Colonial Athletic Association game played Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

With the loss, the Fightin’ Blue Hens fell to 13-7 overall and 5-6 in the CAA. The Hens, who have lost three straight games, will host James Madison University at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 12, at the Bob Carpenter Center.

In Sunday’s game, William & Mary freshman guard Kyle DeHaven scored a career-high 25 points, including two lay-ups in the final 18 seconds, as the Tribe held off a late rally by the Hens.

Junior forward Tiffany Young led the Hens with a team-high 16 points and nine rebounds. Tiara Malcom added 13 points and eight rebounds and Tracey Howell contributed 12 rebounds.

William & Mary, which snapped a three-game losing streak and swept the season series against the Hens, led by double digits for most of the second half before holding off a late UD rally. DeHaven connected on five three-point field goals, and fellow freshman Kyra Kaylor added 13 points despite foul trouble.

The troubles started early as the Hens scored just 17 first-half points, matching their lowest first-half total ever in the 12-year history of the Bob Carpenter Center. The Hens managed just one field goal in the final nine minutes of the first half as William & Mary took a 25-17 advantage into halftime.

UD struggled early in the second half, as well, and William & Mary ran out to a 41-27 lead with 10:29 remaining as DeHaven capped a 10-2 run with a free throw.

The lead remained in double figures for the next seven minutes before the Hens rallied, finally cutting the lead to nine points at 47-38 on a conventional three-point play by Young. The Hens continued to make up ground and cut the lead to 51-48 with 1:20 left as freshman guard Elena Koshansky nailed a three-pointer and followed with two free throws.

Koshansky had a chance to tie the game but missed a three-pointer with 25 seconds remaining. DeHaven grabbed the rebound and drove the length of the court for a lay-up, increasing the lead to 53-48 with 18 seconds left.

DeHaven then struck again as she stole an errant inbounds pass by Julie Sailer and drove for another lay-up with five seconds left to seal the win.
