UD women’s basketball to host William & Mary

10:58 a.m., Feb. 6, 2004--The University of Delaware women’s basketball team suffered through a seven-minute scoring drought in the second half as Virginia Commonwealth University overcame a 10-point halftime deficit and upended the Fightin’ Blue Hens 81-70 in a Colonial Athletic Association contest played Thursday night in Richmond, Va.

With the loss, UD fell to 13-6 overall and 5-5 in the CAA. The Hens will return home to face the College of William & Mary at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 8, in the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

Junior guard Julie Sailer led four UD scorers in doubles figures with 16 points. Junior forward Tiara Malcom scored 15 points and junior forward Tiffany Young and sophomore guard Amanda Blackstone scored 10 each.

Virginia Commonwealth, which improved to 8-10 overall and 5-5 in the CAA, got another big performance from guard Cyndy Wilks, who scored a game-high 29 points and hit on all 10 of her shots from the foul line. Wilks, the CAA’s leading scorer at 21.8 points per game, hit for 30 points in UD’s 66-56 win Jan. 18 at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Also for Virginia Commonwealth, guard Meagan Evans came off the bench to score 14 points.

The game featured 49 fouls and 49 turnovers between the two teams, which combined to hit 47 of 56 free throws.

Everything went right for UD in the first half as the Hens broke out to a 43-33 lead at intermission thanks to Sailer’s 12 points. After Virginia Commonwealth jumped out to an 11-4 lead, the Hens stormed back with a 17- 0 run that put them up 20-11 with 11:55 remaining in the half.

But, after a Malcom jump shot put UD up 51-39 early in the second half, Virginia Commonwealth turned the tables. The Rams scored 20 straight points to take a 59-51 lead with 10:47 remaining.

UD ended the drought when Young connected on a lay-up with 10:25 remaining, but the Rams increased the lead once again.
