UD women’s basketball team falls to James Madison

2:45 p.m., Feb. 2, 2004--The University of Delaware women's basketball team fell 84-57 to James Madison University in a Colonial Athletic Association game played Sunday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va.

With the loss, the Fightin’ Blue Hens fell to 13-5 overall and 5-4 in the CAA.

UD will play at Virginia Commonwealth University on Thursday night, Feb. 5, then will return home to the Bob Carpenter/Sports Convocation Center for a game against the College of William & Mary at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 8.

In Sunday’s loss, UD fell behind by 12 points at halftime and never could catch up. Tiara Malcom had 16 points and nine rebounds, Tracey Howell had her first career double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds and Tiffany Young scored 12 points.

James Madison’s Jody LeRose tied a school record with six three-pointers and was one of four Dukes in doubles figures with a game-high 20 points. Lesley Dickinson added 17 points, Meredith Alexis had 10 points and 13 rebounds and Shirley McCall came off the bench to add 19 points.

UD suffered its worst loss since an 82-55 setback to Old Dominion University on Feb. 10, 2002, and the 84 points were the most allowed by the Hens since falling to Vermont 94-76 on Dec. 9, 1999.

UD had entered the game as the second toughest defense in the CAA, allowing just 59.2 points per game and allowing just two of its opponents this season to reach the 70-point mark.

"We didn't play well today and they did," UD Head Coach Tina Martin, whose team has four losses in league play for the first time since the 1999-2000 season when the Hens were members of America East, said. "They took it right to us and we allowed ourselves to be pushed around. We just didn't play as physical as they did."
