UD freshman guard Liz Hayes sent the game into overtime with a three-pointer just before the buzzer and junior forward Tiara Malcom clinched the victory with two free throws with 14 seconds left in overtime. With the victory, UD improved to 12-4 overall and 4-3 in the CAA. The Hens will host Towson University at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 29, at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center. In Sundays victory, UD rallied to send the game into overtime after letting a 10-point halftime lead slip away. Malcom led the Hens with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Tyresa Smith had 12 points and Hayes had 11. Junior guard Julie Sailer had four points, nine rebounds and four assists, and junior forward Tiffany Young had nine points and eight rebounds. Drexel, which was coming off a 31-point victory over the College of William & Mary on Friday, fell to 7-9 overall and 4-3 in the CAA. Forward Katrina Martin and center Ola Snystina each scored 23 points for the Dragons, Viktoria Hollosy had eight rebounds and eight assists and Catherine Scanlon had nine points, seven rebounds and five steals. UD outscored Drexel 17-5 over the final 10 minutes of the first half, overcoming a 16-14 deficit and taking a seemingly comfortable 31-21 lead into intermission. However, UDs shooters went cold, allowing Drexel to tie the game 33-33 on the heels of a 12-2 run to start the second half. Drexel led 47-44 with just 38 seconds remaining when Smith hit a jump to cut the lead to two. Snystina scored on a lay-up with 10 seconds left to give the Dragons a 49-46 lead. The Hens sent the game into overtime when Sailer pulled down a key offensive rebound off a missed shot by Smith and alertly passed the ball to Hayes, who drained the three-pointer just before the buzzer. Drexel went up early in the overtime period but Hayes scored five points to keep it close, converting a conventional three-point play with 2:08 left to cut the lead to 57-56. Drexel turned the ball over twice in the final two minutes, setting the stage for Malcom, who hit the winning free throws with 14 seconds left. The Dragons had one last chance to win, but Scanlon's jumper with two seconds left was off the mark and Sailer pulled down the rebound to preserve the win. Our kids held their composure and did what they had to do in the second half to get the game into overtime," UD Head Coach Tina Martin said. "Sailer's rebound and assist was the biggest play of the game. In overtime we went to our bread and butter and got the ball to Tiara. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
