Malcom scores 31 points in loss to George Mason

Tiara Malcom scored a career-high 31 points against George Mason.
9:56 a.m., Jan. 23, 2004--University of Delaware junior tri-captain Tiara Malcom scored a career-high 31 points in a 71-64 loss to George Mason University in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action Thursday night at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va.

With the loss, the Fightin’ Blue Hens fell to 11-4 overall and 3-3 in the CAA.

UD will return to action at 1 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 25, when the Hens travel to Philadelphia to take on Drexel University. Drexel is 6-8 overall but 3-2 in conference.

The Hens will return home for a game against Towson University at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 29, at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center. Towson is 8-7 overall but 0-6 in the CAA.

Tickets cost $8, $5 for children, and are available at the University box offices at the Bob Carpenter Center and the Trabant University Center or through Ticketmaster.

Laura Kooij, who hit six three-point field goals and scored 19 points, led George Mason. Susan Otim chipped in 12 points and five assists for the Patriots, who opened the second half on a 28-4 run.

Junior Tiffany Young was the only other UD player to reach double-figures, scoring 10 points.

"We didn't control their penetration during the first eight minutes of the second half and they did whatever they wanted," UD Head Coach Tina Martin said. "We also showed our youth on offense. We just lost it for an eight to nine minute stretch in the second half. At home, we would have knocked down those shots but, unfortunately, tonight we lost our composure."

The Hens took a 34-27 lead into halftime on 16 points from Malcom, including her first-career three-pointer, and seven from freshman Tyresa Smith.

However, George Mason opened the second stanza with a 28-4 run for a 55-38 lead with 7:00 remaining. During that run, Kristin Higy scored six points and Jen Daniels five to lead the Patriots.

UD got back into the game with a furious rally in the final minutes, outscoring George Mason 24-10 over the next 5:17 behind nine points from Malcom and two three-pointers from freshman guard Alena Koshansky to cut the deficit to 65-62 with 1:27 remaining.

George Mason then put the game away on consecutive scores by Jen Derevjanik, a pre-season CAA first team selection.
