UD womens basketball tops Virginia Commonwealth
UD junior forward Tiffany Young had 12 points and 14 rebounds to lead five Fightin Blue Hens in double figures. Freshman guard Liz Hayes scored 12 points, including three three-pointers, and forward Tiara Malcom, guard Julie Sailer and guard Alena Koshansky added 10 points each. UD improved to 11-3 overall and 3-2 in CAA. The Hens will try to win their third game in a row when they take on George Mason University at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 22, at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va. George Mason is 8-4 overall and is tied with the Hens at 3-2 in CAA. Drexel also is 3-2, while Old Dominion and Hofstra are tied for first place at 4-1. Hofstra, which was easily defeated by the Hens earlier in the week, upset perennial power Old Dominion 74-72 on Sunday. On Sunday, the Hens won by overcoming a three-point halftime deficit with a quick second half start. Virginia Commonwealth fell to 5-8 overall and 2-3 in CAA despite an outstanding effort from senior guard Cyndy Wilks. Wilks, the CAA's leading scorer at 19.5 points per game, erupted for 30 points as she hit on nine of 17 shots from the field and 11 of 13 free throws. She also had nine rebounds. Wilks hit for over 20 points for the seventh time this season but the rest of her teammates combined for just 26 points. An evenly matched first half featured nine lead changes, with Virginia Commonwealth taking the advantage at 25-24 with 4:33 left to play on a lay-up by Wilks. Two free throws by Wilks with 1:45 left gave VCU its biggest lead of the half at 33-26 before the Hens rallied to cut the halftime deficit to 33-30 on jumpers by Young and Karleena Tobin. Hayes sparked the Hens early in the second half as she nailed consecutive three-pointers in the first 1:18 as UD took the lead for good at 36-33. After a Wilks lay-up cut the UD lead to 40-39 with 14:10 remaining, the Hens put the game away with a 10-0 run to go up 50-39 with 10:50 remaining. Sailer highlighted the run with five points, and Malcom and Tobin each added jumpers. Virginia Commonwealth never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.
