UD women’s basketball tops Hofstra, snaps streak

Tiara Malcom had 18 points as the Fightin’ Blue Hens defeated Hostra.
1:03 p.m., Jan. 16, 2004--The University of Delaware women’s basketball team ended its two-game losing streak by defeating Hofstra University 78-47 in a Colonial Athletic Association game played Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

UD junior forward Tiara Malcom scored a game-high 18 points, 11 in the first half when the Fightin’ Blue Hens built a 42-15 lead.

With the win, UD improved to 10-3 overall and 2-2 in CAA. Hofstra, which is 6-7 overall, suffered its first conference loss in four games.

UD will host Virginia Commonwealth University at 1 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 18, at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Virginia Commonwealth is 5-7 overall and 2-2 in CAA. The Rams defeated Drexel University 63-53 on Thursday.

In Thursday’s win, UD freshman guard Alena Koshanksy scored a career-high 12 points, hitting both her attempts from behind the three-point line, and junior guard Julie Sailer scored 11.

In her first career start, freshman guard Tyresa Smith had eight points, eight steals and six rebounds. Smith's eight steals tie UD’s single-game record for most steals in a game, shared by six other people. The Hens had a season-high 22 steals, the second-best mark in UD history.

Hofstra was led by Amaka Agugua, who scored all 10 of her points in the second half. Vanessa Gidden added eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
