Prof receives health education award

12:40 p.m., June 9, 2004--Allan Waterfield, professor of health, nutrition and exercise sciences, received the Health Education Network of Delaware (HENOD) achievement award at its annual training conference in Newark this spring. HENOD is composed of professionals and volunteers whose goal is improving health education, programs, services, policies and resources.

Waterfield served as the director of health promotion and research at UD and has been active in the field of health education. He has served as chairperson of the Governor’s Council on Lifestyle and Fitness and on the executive board of the National Association of Governors’ Councils on Fitness. A founder of the Delaware Coalition to Promote Physical Activity and Healthy Nutrition, Waterfield is on the steering committee for the Lt. Governor’s Challenge, a state-sponsored fitness program.

Working with the Delaware Division of Public Health, Waterfield helped originate the “Get Up and Do Something” campaign. He also has chaired IMPACT (Initiatives to Mobilize for the Prevention and Control of Tobacco-use) the Delaware Tobacco Prevention Coalition. He is a former board member of the American Lung Association of Delaware and of the American Cancer Society.

A graduate of Ohio Weslyan University with a master’s degree from Springfield College and doctorate from Ohio State University, Waterfield joined the UD faculty in 1990 and served as dean of the then College of Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation from 1990-97.
