UD volleyball team signs three high school standouts

10:34 a.m., March 23, 2004--Three standout high school volleyball players have signed NCAA national letters of intent to attend the University of Delaware, Head Coach Bonnie Kenny announced Tuesday.

The group includes 6-foot, 3-inch middle/right side hitter Jennifer Buchanan from Fort Washington, Pa.; 5-foot, 9-inch right/outside hitter Kristin Wolchok from South Hempstead, N.Y.; and 6-foot middle hitter Anuhea Friel from Kaneohe, Hawaii.

Buchanan was team captain and a unanimous first team All-Suburban One League selection at Upper Dublin High School last fall. She also is a member of the Valley Forge Volleyball Club.

An outstanding student, Buchanan is a member of Upper Dublin High’s French Club, Women's Choir, National Honor Society and student government. She plans to study psychology at UD.

“Jen could be a big impact player for us this fall,” Kenny, who will enter her third year at the helm of the Blue Hens in the 2004 season, said. “With her presence at the net, she has the potential to be a very dominating player. She can play in lots of different hitting slots and is a good blocker. I am looking forward to helping her develop into a very good volleyball player at this level.”

Wolchok attends South Side High School where she earned All-State Class B and All-County honors while leading the team to the county championship game. She also plays for the Long Island Volleyball Club.

Wolchok plans to major in communication at UD.

“Kristin is a quick, fiery competitor with an arm like a whip,” Kenny said. “She is versatile, can play different roles for us and be a contributor in many different ways. She is someone that other teams might overlook because of her size but she will add depth in several positions and could be a sparkplug for us.”

Friel, UD’s first volleyball recruit from Hawaii, attends Kamehameha High School in Honolulu where she earned second team honors in the Interscholastic League of Hawaii and led her team to a second place finish at the state championships. She also plays for the Quicksets Volleyball Club.

Friel plans to major in psychology or journalism at UD.

“Anu is a very versatile player who has the potential to contribute immediately,” Kenny said. “She is a skilled volleyball player who has a great deal of experience. She can play in the middle, the outside or the right side for us. I am looking forward to seeing where she will best fit into our system.”

UD posted a record of 11-17 during the 2003 season and placed fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association standings with a 5-9 mark in conference play.
