Future Blue Hens learn about Ag opportunities

David Frey, associate professor of plant and soil science, discusses his work with a prospective Blue Hen during a greenhouse and garden tour.
4:46 p.m., April 20, 2004--Delaware teenagers from grades 7 to 11 and their parents were special guests of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources during Future Blue Hens Spring Visit Day on April 15.

“This is the second year of the program, and approximately 40 students with an interest in agriculture and natural resources and their parents took part in the day’s program,” Karen Aniunas, assistant dean for student services, said.

“We offered a variety of interesting and fun activities in half-hour sessions, and students and parents could choose different ones. They ranged from farm, garden and greenhouse tours to sessions on soil science, horses, wildlife biology and pre-veterinary programs, as well as more general sessions on UD, including admissions information and a campus tour. Box lunches were provided and YoUDee made an appearance and entertained the students,” Aniunas said.

The feedback has been positive, with some students back for a second year, including some who brought along their siblings, she said.

The spring visit day is part of a three-pronged program to encourage Delaware students and their families to learn about UD. In the summer, the college gives four Future Blue Hens Awards to 4-H members who have done well at the Delaware State Fair. In the fall, a Future Blue Hens College Exploration Day takes place in Dover and Georgetown giving students an opportunity to learn what UD has to offer.

“Our goal is to have a good relationship with Delaware teenagers, acquaint them with UD and the college and encourage them to make good decisions about taking courses for admission,” Aniunas said.
