Urgent Virus Warning: Worm hits Windows computers

5:15 p.m., May 3, 2004--A new class of computer worm has hit Windows computers on campus. The variants of the Sasser worm are spreading rapidly between systems using the standard Microsoft file-sharing port. According to Susan Foster, vice president for information technologies, "Over 600 student systems have been infected today."

Windows users can find information about this latest outbreak at [http://www.udel.edu/topics/virus/alerts/index.html].

"If your computer is set to apply Windows and McAfee updates automatically, your computer is probably safe from this attack," Beth Miller, IT-User Services, said.

If your computer is affected, visit the IT Help Center's web site [http://www.udel.edu/help] to download the appropriate tools and directions to protect your system.

"This situation should remind all our users how important it is to apply the latest Windows and anti-virus updates and patches," Miller said.
