Shoe display, vigil show costs of drunk driving

Sophomore Mark Cashman and junior Abigail Swartz survey 247 pair of shoes representing the number of Delawareans killed over the past five years in alcohol-related automobile accidents.
4:06 p.m., April 30, 2004--A candlelight vigil and shoe display held Wednesday, April 28, at the Trabant University Center patio, raised awareness on campus about the dangers of drinking and driving, according to Tracy Bachman, program director for the Building Responsibility Coalition, a campus and community partnership advocating policies for the responsible and legal use of alcohol.

Featuring a sobering display of 247 pairs of shoes representing the number of Delawareans killed over the past five years in alcohol-related crashes, the daylong public service event sponsored by MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) and BRC, elicited somber reactions from students.

“This wasn’t a low-key event,” Bachman said. “All the empty pairs of shoes sent a powerful image that made an impact on students as they walked by. It made people stop and think about the number of people in our state who were killed in alcohol-related car accidents over the past five years.”

Besides the vigil and shoe display, the free event also included remembrance speeches by survivors of individuals killed by drunk drivers and an information booth staffed by MADD representatives from the Student Alcohol Use Committee and from the Delaware chapter of MADD.
