Delaware volleyball rallies to defeat LaSalle

Valerie Murphy
3:58 p.m., Sept. 29, 2003--Junior co-captain Valerie Murphy recorded 26 kills and sophomore Niecy Taylor added 16 as the University of Delaware volleyball team rallied to defeat LaSalle University 3-2 on Saturday night at Viera Court in the Carpenter Sports Building.

Senior Allison Hunter also posted 69 assists for the Fightin’ Blue Hens, who improved to 5-7.

Delaware took game one 30-23 before the Explorers (7-10) took game two 30-28 and game three 31-29.

The Hens then rallied to win game four 30-25 and game five 15-7.

The kill totals by Murphy and Taylor were career bests, as was the assist total by Hunter.

Also, junior Sarah Engle had 14 kills for Delaware while fellow junior Taylor Govaars notched 25 digs and freshman Claire McCormack registered nine kills and 10 digs.

The Hens lost to Hofstra University 3-1 in a Colonial Athletic Association contest last Thursday. In that match, Murphy had 18 kills, Taylor had 15 kills and Govaars had a career-best 40 digs.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens will return to action against Georgetown University at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 30, at Georgetown.
