The Fightin Blue Hens defeated Alcorn State University and Youngstown State University but fell in the final game to host New Mexico. UD will return to action Friday evening, competing in the two-day Rutgers Clarion Suites Classic tournament at Rutgers University In the victory over Alcorn State on Friday, UD juniors Valerie Murphy and Sarah Engle posted 12 kills apiece and senior Liz Ommundsen added 10. Delaware won 30-25, 30-17 and 30-28. Freshman Jocelyn Greenwald established a career-high with 24 assists for the Blue Hens, while senior Allison Hunter continued her climb up the UD all-time assist list, racking up 20. She is now in third place with 2,668. In addition, sophomores Niecy Taylor, a native of Albuquerque and graduate of nearby Cibola High School, and Jennifer Daniels posted seven kills each. On Saturday, UD topped Youngstown State 3-1 before falling to New Mexico 3-0. Against Youngstown State, Delaware won the first two games 30-24 and 30-26 before falling 30-22. The Hens came back to win game four 30-19. Murphy led the Blue Hens with 15 kills, and Ommundsen added 12. In addition, freshman Claire McCormack chipped in with 11 kills and 15 digs. New Mexico defeated UD 32-30, 30-23 and 30-19. Daniel led the Hens with 13 kills while Murphy added eight and Ommundsen five. In the Rutgers Clarion Suites Classic opener, Delaware will face host Rutgers at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 12.
