Hen volleyball team bound for New Mexico


1:10 p.m., Sep. 2, 2003--Following three losses in the College of Charleston Invitational to open the season, the University of Delaware volleyball team is making preparations to compete in the University of New Mexico Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 5-6.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens will face Alcorn State University on Friday and Youngstown State University and host New Mexico on Saturday.

UD dropped its final game at the College of Charleston Invitational 3-1 to Texas Christian University on Saturday. Texas Christian took game one 30-26, game two 30-26 and game three 30-24.

Dominika Szabo posted a double-double for TCU (2-1) with 15 kills and 13 digs, while Ellen Rehme notched 12 kills, six digs and three block assists. Tori Barlow added 30 assists for TCU, which was meeting Delaware for the first time in school history.

Delaware received nine kills from sophomore Jennifer Daniels, eight from junior Sarah Engle and seven from junior co-captain Valerie Murphy. In addition, freshman Heather Ranck recorded 14 digs and fellow freshman Claire McCormack added 13.

UD senior Allison Hunter posted 104 assists during the tournament and has now climbed into third place on UD's all-time assist list with 2,652, passing Sadie Bjornstad (1996-99), who finished her career with 2,571.

UD dropped its first two matches of the tournament on Friday, falling to the College of Charleston 3-1 and to Middle Tennessee State University 3-1.

The College of Charleston downed Delaware 30-20, 30-28, 28-30 and 30-25 and Middle Tennessee State defeated the Hens 30-24, 30-13, 28-30 and 32-30.

Against Middle Tennessee, KeKe Deckard posted 17 kills and seven digs and both Victoria Monasterolo and Dana McLean notched 11 kills. Murphy had 16 kills, Engle 15 and Daniels 11.

Against the College of Charleston, UD was paced by Murphy, who posted 14 kills, and Engle, who had 13 kills and five digs. Junior Taylor Govaars registered a career-high 30 digs in the loss.
