United Way campaign exceeds goal

4:11 p.m., Dec. 5, 2003--United Way’s campus fundraiser finished on a successful note, netting a total of $177,000, exceeding the campaign goal by $2,000.

Wrapping up on Friday, Nov. 14, the 2003 campuswide drive collected pledges from 874 UD employees and 47 retirees. The Pacesetter campaign, which was launched separately but contributed to the overall fund drive totals, collected pledges from 75 employees in senior management positions at the University.

According to President David P. Roselle, who spoke at the Dec. 4 campaign conclusion reception held at his home, the fund drive’s success resulted from generous pledges and dedicated solicitors.

“We know from our figures that we exceeded our projected goal,” Roselle said. “We have more than 900 employees and 137 solicitors to thank for making the campaign a success.”

Roselle added that direct access to web-based pledge forms at United Way, introduced this year, expedited the giving process by eliminating UD paperwork and enabling employees to make donations directly.

Roselle introduced Michelle Taylor, acting president of United Way of Delaware, who echoed his enthusiasm and thanked the pledgers and solicitors.

“At the [campaign] kick-off event, we started with a goal, and we met and exceeded that goal,” she said. “But, giving to United Way is not about numbers or statistics. It’s about helping as many people as we can. On the behalf of the United Way of Delaware and the community we serve, I’d like to say thank you.”

To reward generous pledgers and solicitors, Roselle and Vice President for Administration Maxine Colm announced winners of 38 incentive prizes in an informal ceremony that concluded the reception.

Incentives included the grand prize—a guided tour of Delaware museums, complete with limousine service and three dinner vouchers to Vita Nova, the Blue & Gold Club and a restaurant of the winner’s choosing—as well as University of Delaware Bookstore gift certificates, UD Outdoor Pool memberships and tickets to the Performing Arts Series on campus.
