UD grad programs ranked in forthcoming U.S. News guide

12:05 a.m., April 2, 2004--UD graduate programs in physical therapy, engineering, urban affairs and education are ranked in the forthcoming 2005 edition of U.S.News & World Report’s “America’s Best Graduate Schools.”

Three UD graduate programs were ranked among the top 10 in the nation: physical therapy was ranked fourth, and urban affairs and chemical engineering were both ranked ninth. The Department of Chemical Engineering tied with the universities of California at Santa Barbara and Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Overall, UD’s College of Engineering was ranked 48th in graduate education, tied with Boston University. Other UD graduate engineering disciplines ranked this year are

  • Department of Materials Science and Engineering, tied at 32nd with Drexel University and the universities of Arizona and California at Davis;
  • Department of Mechanical Engineering, tied at 48th, with the Illinois Institute of Technology, the universities of Arizona and Missouri-Rolla and Vanderbilt University;
  • Department of Civil Engineering, tied at 50th, with Auburn, Clemson, Drexel, Michigan Technological, Oregon State and Washington State universities, and the universities of Cincinnati and Tennessee; and
  • Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, tied at 62nd, with Auburn University, the universities of Connecticut, Illinois-Chicago and Iowa and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

In the College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy, graduate programs in urban affairs and education were ranked this year. The School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy was ranked 35th among public affairs programs nationwide, tying with Cornell, Northern Illinois and Texas A&M universities, Indiana University-Purnell University at Indianapolis and the universities of Colorado-Denver and Missouri-Columbia. In addition, UD’s program in nonprofit management was ranked 14th, tied with the University of San Francisco.

The School of Education was ranked at 55, tying with Florida State University and Washington University in St. Louis. In the area of elementary education, UD’s program was ranked 23rd, tying with Boston College (Lynch), Florida State University and the universities of Arizona, Florida and Illinois-Chicago.

“These rankings are another indication of the quality of graduate education available at the University of Delaware,” Provost Dan Rich said. “In addition to these programs, UD has many graduate programs in fields not routinely ranked by U.S. News that are widely considered to be among the best in the nation.”

The University of Delaware currently has more than 3,300 students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees in 113 degree programs across all seven colleges.

“America’s Best Graduate Schools,” a newsstand book, will be available on April 5, and many of the ranking categories also will appear in the April 12 edition of U.S.News & World Report, which goes on sale the same day.
