The power of United Way pledges

3:27 p.m., Nov. 11, 2003--According to Michelle Taylor, acting president of United Way of Delaware, 10 percent of elderly Delawareans live below the poverty line.

For example, an elderly widower who struggled with depression and poor physical health after his wife died is just one of many needy senior citizens who have benefited from United Way intervention. Unable to receive medical assistance through the formal community health care structure, he heard about CHEER Home Services, a Community Impact-funded program that provides nonskilled home health care to seniors in need of assistance. Through this program, the man was able to get the assistance he needed until other funding became available. Today, he is in good health and regularly visits the CHEER Senior Center to socialize and make new friends.

For more stories about local residents who have benefited from United Way, visit [www.uwde.org/success] or call 573-3700.

United Way’s campuswide campaign runs through Friday, Nov. 14, and aims to raise $175, 000 in employee pledges. Please give generously by pledging online at [www.udel.edu/unitedway].
