New e-mail virus hits UD

12:30 p.m., Nov. 4, 2003--Friday afternoon, Oct. 31, mail messages carrying the /Mimail.c@MM Trojan virus, a variant of the Mimail Trojan, spread through UD’s campus network. Infected messages carried an attachment with a .ZIP extension and were sent out as if they had come from “james” or “john” at a variety of UD addresses.

Neither “james@udel.edu” nor “john@udel.edu” is responsible for propagating this attack.

According to Jason Cash, IT-Network and Systems Services, this pattern has been seen all over the Internet. “Since the virus uses the domain of the infected user, it could come from james@<just about anything>. Later versions of mimail seen on the Internet appear to come from the address john@<domain of infected person>.”

Anti-virus updates

UD’s local server has been updated with McAfee's latest DATS (4301) in order to take care of this threat. For more information, visit [http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100795.htm].

Those who use Windows computers that are not set to automatically update virus protection should update immediately through the McAfee VirusScan Console.
