UD tennis coach Travis wins national recognition
Travis, who is in her 12th season as head coach of the women's tennis team and 11th as head coach of the men's team, was honored on Friday, Dec. 12, at the ITA Coaches Convention at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa in Miami. Boise State University men's tennis coach Greg Patton also was honored as national winner of the Community Service Award. "Greg and Laura are great examples of college tennis coaches who give back to their communities and campuses, and our hope is that over the next few years, many other varsity coaches will try to emulate the great work they are doing," ITA Executive Director David A. Benjamin said. "The ITA and USTA strongly believe that community service and campus recreation programs are extremely important for today's college coaches to become involved in, and these awards help highlight the efforts of those coaches who have." Travis has been instrumental in the implementation of several programs geared to increasing tennis participation on the UD campus. Over the last five years, she has implemented USA Tennis Free for All, USA Tennis 1-2-3 and USA Team tennis programs. At UD, Travis has compiled a record of 130-59 with the women's tennis team and a mark of 121-81 with the men's team entering the 2003-04 season. During the fall, she guided the women to a 3-2 mark and the men to a 6-2 record. She led the men to the America East title during the 1996-97 season and, since joining the Colonial Athletic Association prior to the 2001-02 season, the UD men have compiled a 7-5 record in conference play while the women are 8-3. This is the inaugural year for these awards. The national winners were selected from a group of USTA sectional winners determined this fall. The awards program was open to more than 2,000 ITA head and assistant coaches. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
