Transportation forum set Nov. 6

4 p.m., Oct. 16, 2003--The Delaware Center for Transportation at UD is seeking input to identify the most important transportation issues facing the region.

The 2003 Transportation Education and Research Forum takes place Thursday, Nov. 6, at Clayton Hall. Anyone interested in improving the transportation system is welcome to attend this free forum.

The forum begins at 7:30 a.m. with a free continental breakfast and an opportunity to meet vendors representing companies that specialize in construction and transportation maintenance. After breakfast, Nathan Hayward III, secretary of Delaware Department of Transportation; Thomas Myers, Federal Highway Administration division administrator for Delaware; and Nick Vitillo, research manager for New Jersey Department of Transportation, will give presentations about the value of transportation education and research.

After the initial presentations, participants will divide into 10 groups, with each group holding a roundtable discussion on a specific aspect of transportation. The 10 categories participants can choose from are:

  • Bridges and structures;
  • Planning and multimodal issues;
  • Administration and government policy;
  • Maintenance;
  • Traffic and intelligent transportation systems;
  • Construction, pavement and materials;
  • Transit and public transportation;
  • Environment;
  • Local government issues; and
  • Design.

After lunch, break-out session participants will reassemble for a general session to present the results of their discussion.

There is no fee for the forum, but registration is required by Friday, Oct. 24. For more information or to register call 831-0674 or 831-1446 or e-mail [sandy@ce.udel.edu].
