Hens Stille, Bennett compete at NCAA regional meet

Mandy Stille
9:30 a.m., May 28, 2004--Two members of the University of Delaware women's track and field team, freshman hurdler Mandy Stille and junior pole vaulter Casey Bennett, will compete in the NCAA’s East regional championship meet beginning Friday afternoon at Percy Beard Track and Field on the campus of the University of Florida.

Stille will compete in the 100-meter hurdles at 5:15 p.m. and Bennett will compete in the pole vault at 3 p.m. The top five finishers in each event will advance to the NCAA championships to be held June 9-12 at the University of Texas in Austin.

Stille reached the regional meet as an automatic qualifier after capturing the Colonial Athletic Association 100-meter hurdles championship last month in Richmond, Va. Bennett qualified by meeting the minimum qualifying height earlier in the season.

Stille and Bennett will be trying to become the first UD women's outdoor track and field athletes to advance to the NCAA championships since Candy Cashell, who finished sixth in the high jump at the 1986 championships held at Indiana University.

Casey Bennett
Both Stille and Bennett competed at the University of Florida earlier this season, participating in the Florida Relays held March 25-27.

Stille has enjoyed an outstanding freshman season for the Fightin’ Blue Hens, establishing school records in the 100-meter hurdles (14.42); 4 x 100 meter relay (57.17), 4 x 400 meter relay (3:51.60), triple jump (38 feet, 9-3/4 inches), and heptathlon (4,853).

Bennett has won the pole vault at nine different meets during the indoor and outdoor seasons and finished 11th at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) outdoor championships. She holds the UD pole vault record, having cleared 12-feet 6-inches both indoors and outdoors.

In addition, Bennett is a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American candidate.
