Blue Hens third, fifth in Delaware Invitational

10:42 a.m., April 12, 2004--The University of Delaware men’s team finished third and the women’s team fifth in the UD Track and Field Invitational, held Saturday at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.

More than 1,500 athletes from 24 colleges and universities participated in the meet. The U.S. Military Academy won the men’s competition, followed by Rider University and UD, and Rutgers University won the women’s competition, followed by Rider and Coppin State University.

In the division for smaller universities, Cortland State University won the men's team title and the College of New Jersey won the women’s team title.

UD’s men captured three individual championships, as Mike Yost won the hammer throw (169 feet, 5-1/2 inches), John Morgan won the 800 meters (1:55.04), and the 4 x 100-meter relay team won in a time of 42.19.

For the UD women, Casey Bennett won the pole vault with a leap of 10 feet, 10 inches.

Also for the UD men, the 4 x 400-meter relay team finished second (3:22.20), Scott Armstrong finished third in the javelin (175-0) and Brett McMonagle was third in the pole vault (12-10 1/4).

Jerome Holder was third in the 400-meter hurdles (54.62) and fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (14.82), Charlie Williams was third in the 400 meters (49.92) and Charlie Dielmann was third in the 800 meters (1:55.77).

Yost also placed fourth in the discus (147-11) and Chris Dixon was fourth in both the 110-meter hurdles (15.56) and in the 400-meter hurdles (15.56).

For the UD women, the 4 x 100 meter relay team finished second (47.90), Brittany Wright finished third in the 200 meters (25.86) and fifth in the 100 meters (12.51) and Tyechia Smith was third in the 400 meters (57.38) and ninth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:07.65).

Reagan Hastings was fourth in the pole vault (8-10 1/4), Rachel Young was fifth in the shot put (41-8 1/2) and discus (126-2 1/2) and ninth in the hammer (124-6), Kristen Collins was fifth in the long jump (17-3 1/4) and seventh in the high jump (14-9), and Stephanie Cronk was sixth in the discus (114-10) and ninth in the javelin (107-8).

UD will compete in the Colonial Athletic Association championship meet April 16-17 in Richmond, Va.
