New town and gown web site unveiled

11:08 a.m., Sept. 16, 2003--A new town and gown web site was unveiled Monday, Sept. 15, at the meeting of the Town & Gown Committee in the Newark Municipal Building.

Featuring artwork that combines a view of Main Street with one of The Green at UD, the site was designed by Lane McLaughlin, art director in UD’s Office of Public Relations and a Newark native, with guidance from Joan Odell, chairperson of the Town & Gown Committee and assistant University secretary at UD, and City Manager Carl Luft.

The site at [www.udel.edu/towngown/] features six sections: People, Resources, What’s Happening, Housing, Issues and Getting Involved.

The People link provides information on the Town and Gown Committee, Newark city officials, including e-mail address, a city directory and Downtown Newark Partnership (DNP) committees.

The Resources pages includes links to a variety of sites, including Town and Gown meeting minutes, employment opportunities in the city and at UD, the city’s and UD’s web sites, the DNP, the Building Responsibility Coalition, the Newark Arts Alliance and others.

Under What’s Happening, Internet surfers can find links to city and UD events, as well as a link to UDaily.

The section on Housing includes everything from an apartment guide and the city’s landlord/tenant code to facts about lead-based paint from the Environmental Protection Agency.

The Issues page has links on such topics as alcohol, downtown and residential parking and also includes links to Newark’s Police Department and UD’s Department of Public Safety.

Getting Involved features links to community service opportunities and mentoring and outreach activities, as well as to such groups as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity and the Food Bank of Delaware.

In presenting the site to the committee, Mary Hempel, assistant to the president and director of public relations at UD, said, “It was a pleasure to work on this site, and we hope it’s of use to members of the city and campus communities.”
