UD softball team upsets Hofstra in CAA tourney

6:59 p.m., May 13, 2004--In an upset, the University of Delaware softball team defeated perennial champion and top-seeded Hofstra University 3-2 in Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament action on Thursday afternoon in Hempstead, N.Y.

UD took a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning when first baseman Liz Winslow cracked a three-run home run, plating right fielder Kelley Pastic and third baseman Laura Streets.

Freshman pitcher Carolynn Sloat went the distance for the Fightin’ Blue Hens, allowing two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Sloat struck out eight batters and walked just one in recording her 18th victory of the season.

The Hens will face James Madison University, also a first game winner, at 12:30 p.m., Friday, May 14. James Madison defeated Towson 2-0 in the opening game of the double elimination tournament.

Host Hofstra will face Towson at 10 a.m., Friday, with the loser knocked out of the tournament.

The loser of the UD-James Madison game will face the winner of the Hofstra-Towson game at 3 p.m., Friday, with the championship to be decided on Saturday.
