Summer Faculty Institute set June 7-9 1:11 p.m., May 28, 2004--UDs summer Faculty Institute begins Monday, June 7, with a pre-institute session on Promoting Thoughtful Online Discussions through Effective Questioning from noon4:30 p.m. The deadline for institute registration is Friday, June 4. Led by Carol DeArment, instructional designer for the Center for Instructional Development and Distance Education at the University of Pittsburgh, the pre-institute session includes a hands-on workshop on using discussion groups on WebCT, UDs course management system. The centerpiece of the summer Faculty Institute is the General Education Institute Tuesday and Wednesday, June 8-9. The goals of the General Education Institute are to place UDs General Education Initiative in a national context, to highlight the initiatives ethics, cultural diversity and assessment, and to help faculty develop instructional approaches that advance general education goals. The institute is scheduled two full days. On Tuesday, June 8, it begins with breakfast at 8 a.m. and ends with a reception and poster session at 4 p.m. On Wednesday, June 9, presentations begin at 9 a.m. and end at 3 p.m., after lunch and breakout sessions. Additional Faculty Institute presentations throughout June and July will give faculty, staff and graduate students opportunities to explore how technology can enhance active learning. There will be hands-on sessions in Web CT and presentations on using digital mapping in research and video conferencing. Additional presentations will explain bulk slide scanning, CD and DVD mastering and duplication, campus training module creation and other instructional media resources.
