Stephens swims to five titles at Bucknell meet

UD’s Sara Stephens won five events and set several records.
10:36 a.m., Dec. 8, 2003--The University of Delaware women's swimming and diving team placed second and the UD men were third at the weekend’s Bucknell Invitational.

The UD women captured nine first-place finishes, while Steve Henn was the lone men's champion with a first-place finish in the one-meter dive.

Bucknell swept the team title in both the men's and women's meets. On the women's side, Bucknell posted 1,104 points, followed by Delaware (845.5), New Hampshire (657.5) and La Salle (634).

On the men's side, Bucknell won with 1,081 points, followed by La Salle (917.5), Delaware (652.5), and New Hampshire (469).

UD junior Sara Stephens captured five first-place finishes, set three meet records, two pool records and a school record to lead the Fightin’ Blue Hen women’s team.

She was a winner in the 400 freestyle relay (3:37.60), 400 medley relay (meet record time of 3:57.60), 100 butterfly (meet and pool record time of 57.37), 200 butterfly (meet and school record time of 2:05.91) and 200 individual medley (meet and pool record time of 2:08.58). In the 200 butterfly, she broke her previous school record of 2:06.08 set in 2001-02.

Senior Sarah Peffer captured first place in the 500 freestyle (meet record 4:59.98), 1,650 freestyle (meet record 17:07.82) and 400 individual medley (meet and school record 4:26.63). In the 400 individual medley, she broke her own school record of 4:26.78 set last season.

Also for the UD women, senior Jill Fitzgerald was first in the 400 freestyle relay (3:37.60), 400 medley relay (meet record 3:57.60) and 100 freestyle (meet record 52.79).

Other first-place finishers were Sara Reed in the 400 freestyle relay (3:37.60), Kim Fields in the 400 freestyle relay (3:37.60), Kristen Avioli in the 400 medley relay (meet record 3:57.60) and Lauren Ostroski in the 400 medley relay.

In addition, Meredith Law was second in the 500 freestyle (5:10.36); Avioli, Ostroski, Stephens and Fitzgerald were second in the 200 medley relay (1:50.31); Peffer was second in the 200 butterfly (2:09.36); Fitzgerald was second in both the 50 freestyle (24.67) and 200 freestyle (1:54.40); and Fields was second in the 1,650 freestyle (17:35.66).

On the men's side, Henn enjoyed an outstanding meet, winning the three-meter diving event (456.15 points) and placing second in the one-meter (386.0).

Junior Alex Skacel placed third in both the 200 backstroke (1:58.67) and 200 individual medley (2:00.23) and was fourth in the 200 medley relay (1:40.93) and 100 backstroke (54.92). In addition, freshman Sean Lyons was fourth in the 100 butterfly (53.69) and fifth in both the 200 medley relay (1:40.93) and 100 butterfly (53.69).
