UD women’s swim team tops Rider, set records

9:32 a.m., Nov. 24, 2003--Sara Stephens, Jill Fitzgerald and Sara Reed each won two individual events as the University of Delaware women's swimming and diving team defeated host Rider University 146-91 in a dual meet Saturday afternoon.

The Fightin’ Blue Hen women’s team improved to 5-1 with the victory.

The UD men’s team was defeated by Rider 155.5-85.5 and fell to 1-4. The Hens had a first-place finish by Steve Henn in the one-meter diving event and won the 400 freestyle relay (3:22.14).

Stephens, a junior, set two pool records as she finished first in the 200 individual medley (2:10.06) and the 200 butterfly (2:08.22).

Fitzgerald, a senior captain, won both sprint events in capturing the 50 freestyle (25.00) and the 100 freestyle (53.90). Reed, a junior, finished first in the 200 freestyle (1:59.22) and the 200 backstroke (2:11.15).

Stephens and Fitzgerald, along with Kristen Avioli and Lauren Ostroski, set a pool record in winning the 400 medley relay (4:01.07).

In the men's meet, UD got a first-place finish from the 400 relay team of Kevin Kotowski, Colin Gibson, Max Evers and Jeff Shields.

Henn, a freshman, won the one-meter dive (194.25) and placed second in the three-meter dive (197.40).

Both UD squads will return to action on Dec. 6-7 at the Bucknell Invitational.
