Peffer, Fitzgerald pace UD women’s swimming team

12:55 a.m., Nov. 17, 2003--Sarah Peffer won three individual events and Jill Fitzgerald won twice as the University of Delaware women's swimming and diving team defeated Drexel 140-94 in a dual meet held Saturday afternoon at the Rawstrom Natatorium in the Carpenter Sports Building.

The Fightin’ Blue Hen women’s team improved to 4-1 with the victory as UD downed Drexel for 13th straight time.

In the men's meet, UD fell to Drexel 151-86 despite victories from Joe Virion in the 1,000 freestyle (10:11.88) and David Hardy in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.36). With the loss, the Hens fell to 1-4 on the season.

Both UD squads will return to action Saturday, Nov. 22, at Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J.

Peffer, a senior who won three titles at last year's Colonial Athletic Association championships, won the 500 freestyle (5:09.02), 1,000 freestyle (10:22.74) and 200 butterfly (2:13.12).

Fitzgerald, a senior captain, won a pair of sprints, capturing the 50 freestyle (24.98) and 100 freestyle (54.06) events.

Also for the Hens, Sara Stephens won the 200 individual medley (2:12.5) and Sara Reed won the 200 backstroke (2:09.85). The 400 medley relay team of Kristen Avioli, Lauren Ostroski, Sarah Bacewicz and Meredith Law won in a time of 4:08.17.

Avioli also was second in the 50 freestyle and 200 backstroke, Ostroski was second in the 200 individual medley, Stephens and Reed were second in the 400 medley relay, and Law was third in both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle.

In the men's meet, UD also got a first-place finish from the 400 freestyle relay team of Kevin Kotowski, Brendan Spencer, Colin Gibson and Corey Sanderson in a time of 3:23.13. Sanderson finished second in the 1,000 freestyle while Virion was part of the second-place 400 freestyle relay team and also placed third in the 500 freestyle.

Diver Steve Henn was third in both the one-meter and three-meter diving events.
