UD women’s swim team gets off to a fast start

9:55 a.m., Oct. 27, 2003--The University of Delaware women’s swimming and diving team got off to a fast start, with weekend victories over Colonial Athletic Association foes the College of William & Mary and Old Dominion University at Rawstrom Natatorium in the Carpenter Sports Building.

The UD women defeated William & Mary 134-109 and Old Dominion 130-112. The UD men dropped both meets, falling 138-99 to William & Mary and 136.5 to 101.5 to Old Dominion.

Both teams return to action at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 1, when they host Georgetown University.

In Sunday’s victory, Sara Stephens and Kristen Avioli each had a hand in three first-place finishes for the Fightin’ Blue Hens.

Stephens won the 200 individual medley (2:12.62) and 200 butterfly (2:09.14) and teamed with Avioli, Erica Pearson and Jill Fitzgerald to win the 400 medley relay in 4:03.52.

Avioli also captured the 200 backstroke (2:11.61) and teamed with Meredith Law, Kim Fields and Sara Reed to win the 400 medley relay in 4:03.52.

Fitzgerald also won the 100 freestyle (53.85) and was second in the 50 freestyle (25.02), Sarah Peffer was second in the 200 freestyle (1:57.31), 500 freestyle (5:08.83) and 200 breaststroke (2:29.89), and Fields was second in the 1,000 freestyle (10:41.10).

The UD men had individual wins from freshman diver Steve Henn, David Hardy and Alex Skacel.

Henn won the three-meter dive with a total of 249.75 points and placed second in the one-meter event with a score of 198.75. Skacel won the 200 backstroke (2:02.05) and Hardy won the 200 breaststroke (2:21.57).

The Hens also got a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle from the team of Brendan Spencer, Jeff Shields, Mike Rasch and Kevin Kotowski in a time of 3:19.75.

Shields was also second in the 200 freestyle (1:49.27) while Kotowski was third in the 100 freestyle (50.30) and 200 freestyle (1:50.66) and Spencer was third in the 200 individual medley (2:01.96) and in the 200 butterfly (2:06.08).

On Friday, Stephens won two individual events and was part of a winning relay team. Stephens won the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:10.10 and the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:08.03. In the 200 butterfly, she won the race by more than six seconds and was within two seconds of the UD record.

Stephens was also a member of UD's winning relay team in the 400 medley with teammates Kristen Avioli, Sarah Peffer and Jill Fitzgerald. Peffer also won the 1000 freestyle for Delaware.

For the men, Henn won the one-meter dive with a score of 227.78, outdistancing his competition by nearly 30 points. He also won the three-meter with a score of 186.50.
