UD swim teams to host CAA rivals this weekend

10:15 a.m. Oct. 24, 2003--The University of Delaware swimming and diving teams will open their 2003-04 seasons this weekend with home meets against Colonial Athletic Association opponents.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens, led by 15th-year head coach John Hayman, will open the season at 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 24, with a meet against the College of William & Mary at Harry W. Rawstrom Pool in the Carpenter Sports Building. The Hens will return to action at 1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 26, against Old Dominion University.

The UD women posted a 7-4 dual meet record and placed fourth at the CAA championships last season while the UD men went 2-8 and placed ninth at the conference meet.

The UD women, who have posted winning dual meet seasons in nine of the last 10 campaigns and have never placed lower than fifth at the conference meet during that time span, are led by the three-time CAA champion Sarah Peffer and veterans Meghan Petry, Jill Fitzgerald and Sara Stephens. Peffer, a second-year transfer from the University of Nebraska, captured the 500 freestyle, 400 individual medley and 1,650 freestyle at the CAA championships at George Mason University last February. Stephens was the 200 butterfly runner-up a year ago, and all four have earned All-East honors during their careers.

The UD men, who won four straight conference titles from 1997-2000, are led by returning standouts Alex Skacel and Kevin Kotowski. Skacel placed 22nd in the 100 backstroke at the regional championships last season. There are 14 freshmen on the 26-man roster

The William & Mary women placed third and the men sixth at the CAA championships last season. The Old Dominion men placed seventh and the women eighth at the conference championships.
