New recent student trustee joins board
A 1999 graduate of Glasgow High School and a Newark resident, Townsend graduated from UD with a bachelor of science with honors degree and a masters degree in economics, both in 2003. He was named a Truman Scholar that year. This year Townsend earned another degree to complete the Deans Scholars program, receiving an honors bachelor's degree with distinction with a double major in philosophy and biology. A participant in intramural sports while at UD, Townsend served as a Blue Hen Ambassador and a student representative on the Appellate Judicial Board, as well as president of the honor society, Alpha Lambda Delta, from 2000-01. He also participated in several Study Abroad sessions, with trips to Dublin, London, England, Paris, Barcelona and Rome. Townsend, who becomes the 13th recent student trustee, plans to spend this summer as an intern in the Department of Clinical Bioethics at the National Institutes of Health and will return to Delaware in the fall to continue his health services research at Christiana Care Health System. He also plans to hike the entire length of the Appalachian Trial before entering medical school in 2006.
Brohawn, a Newark resident active as an advocate for both the city and UD, served as a peer mentor for the Learning Integrated Freshman Experience (LIFE) program, a Blue Hen Ambassador and an Ag Ambassador. Currently, she is a population and environment intern with the National Wildlife Federation. In other action, the board re-elected Robert W. Gore and Joan Thompson-Mobley to six-year terms and re-elected its officersHoward E. Cosgrove, chairman; Robert A. Fischer Jr. and Gore, both vice chairman; and Mobley, secretary-treasurerfor one-year terms.
The resolution, read by Andrew Kirkpatrick, honorary counselor to the board and former chairman, cited Odells more than 13 years of service during which she prepared the minutes for 440 meetings of the board and its committees. This Medal is awarded for extended, exemplary service in assisting members of the board in fulfilling their responsibilities, Kirkpatrick said. The Board also noted Odells commitment to the Newark Traffic Calming Committee, the Dining and Parking Appeals Committees, the Professional Advisory Committee, the Warner Taylor Award Selection Committee, as well as several search committees.
