UD’s Sara Stephens named CAA Scholar-Athlete of Year

9:27 a.m., April 23, 2004--University of Delaware junior Sara Stephens has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year in women’s swimming and diving.

A three-year standout for the Fightin’ Blue Hens, Stephens enjoyed her finest season in 2003-04 when she led UD to a fifth-place finish at the CAA championships by finishing second in the 100 and 200 butterfly and third in the 200 individual medley. She also swam on the championship 400 medley relay team.

In 2002-03, Stephens finished in the top four in six events at the CAA championships, taking second place in the 200 butterfly and swimming on the runner-up 400 medley relay team.

Stephens owns 14 career top five finishes at the CAA championships and is a six-time All-East selection for her performances at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) regional championships.

She holds school records in the 100 butterfly (56.06), 200 butterfly (2:05.91), 200 medley relay (1:47.25), 200 freestyle relay (1:37.88) and 400 medley relay (3:52.19).

A College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America candidate, Stephens is a three-time recipient of the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award and carries a 3.706 grade point index as an exercise physiology major.
