Delaware softball team plays for CAA title
With the victory, Head Coach B.J. Fergusons Fightin Blue Hens advance to the championships on Saturday. If the Hens prevail in the noontime game, they will win the CAA title. If they lose, they will play again at 2:30 p.m. to determine the conference champion. In the game at noon, Saturday, UD will face the winner of Fridays late game between Hofstra and James Madison. Hofstra beat Towson 7-5 in the morning game to knock the Tigers out of the double elimination tournament Against James Madison, as in the opening game victory over host Hofstra, the Hens struck first. Shortstop Michelle Plant led off the bottom of the first inning with a double and came around to score on a single by designated player Randi Isaacs. UD continued to add pressure, extending the lead to 2-0 in the third when catcher Laurie Erickson doubled to drive home right fielder Kelley Pastic. Freshman pitcher Carolynn Sloat started and pitched well but tired in the top of the fifth, allowing two runs to score. Jenn Joseph came on in relief and got out of the inning without any further damage. The Hens got those two runs back and regained the lead 4-2 in the bottom of the inning when Erickson and second baseman Jenny Gilkins scored on a hit by left fielder Heather Wrenn. Joseph proceeded to shut down James Madison in the sixth and seventh to secure the win. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
