Softball team loses final two of regular season to Maryland

11:24 a.m., May 7, 2004--The University of Delaware softball team ended its regular season Thursday with a pair of losses to the University of Maryland in a nonconference doubleheader at Delaware Field.

Delaware, which ended the regular season with a 27-22-1 record, lost the first game 3-2 in extra innings, the team’s first loss in six extra-inning games this season.

Blue Hen freshman hurler Carolynn Sloat, who was recently named Colonial Athletic Association Softball Rookie of the Week, took the loss while notching four strikeouts and surrendering a walk. Sloat, 17-3 on the season, tied a UD record by making her 37th appearance and extended a Delaware record by pitching her 26th complete game.

In the second game, Maryland won 3-0, on the strength of a complete game victory by Jessica Aditays, who tossed a four-hit shutout to bring her record to 12-11. Jenn Jones (9-6) took the loss for the Hens.

Randi Isaacs hit safely in both games for Delaware to extend her hitting streak to a career-long 10 games.

Laura Streets, who has reached base via a hit or walk in 47 of 50 games this season, singled in her last two plate appearances to keep her average at .399. Streets has a chance to become the first Delaware player in 22 years to hit the magic .400 batting mark.

Postseason possibilities

To advance to the four-team CAA playoffs, the Hens would need for Towson to lose two of three games at Drexel, or for George Mason to lose one of three games at UNC Wilmington this weekend.

The Blue Hens also could qualify for the tournament if the Towson and George Mason games were rained out. Should the three teams finish at 9-8 in the conference, UD and Towson would advance to the tournament by virtue of their regular season victories over Hofstra. The Hens would win a head-to-head tie with Towson but would lose a head-to-head tie with George Mason.
