Streets leads UD softball to win, tie at Rutgers

Laura Streets
10:38 a.m., April 29, 2004--The University of Delaware softball team came away with a win and its first tie of the season in a doubleheader played Wednesday afternoon at Rutgers University. The Fightin’ Blue Hen won the opener 4-2, and the team played to a 4-4 tie before the second game was called after seven innings because of darkness.

In the opener, UD senior third baseman Laura Streets drove in all four runs with a double and a home run, and freshman pitcher Carolynn Sloat earned her 16th win of the season. Senior first baseman Liz Winslow had three hits in the second game.

The Hens improved to 25-19-1 on the season and, with four wins and a tie in their last five games, enter a key weekend series against Colonial Athletic Association rival Towson University with some momentum. The Hens need a strong series to remain in contention for a conference playoff berth.

The teams will meet at Towson for a doubleheader at noon, Saturday, May 1, and a single game at noon, Sunday, May 2.

In the opening game Wednesday, Rutgers scored two first inning runs but Streets had a big game to bring the Hens back. She doubled with two outs in the third to score freshman shortstop Michelle Plant and cut the deficit to 2-1. Two innings later, Streets hit her second home run of the season, a three-run shot that brought home Plant and junior right fielder Kelley Pastic.

In the second game, UD junior Jenn Joseph was involved in a pitcher’s duel until a wild fifth inning. The Hens entered the fifth trailing 1-0 but scored four times on three errors, a hit batter and a single by Winslow.

Rutgers came back in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs off relievers Lindsay Jones and Kelsey Knapp to make it 4-4.

Sloat, who has allowed just two earned runs in her last 55 innings of work, entered for UD and shut down Rutgers the rest of the way. Neither team was able to break through before the game was halted by darkness.
