Blue Hen softball team blanks UNC Wilmington

UD freshman Carolynn Sloat has 15 wins.
10:19 a.m., April 26, 2004--With stellar pitching, the University of Delaware softball team shut out the University of North Carolina Wilmington in three straight games to sweep a Colonial Athletic Association weekend series at Delaware Field.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens defeated UNC Wilmington 2-0 and 1-0 in extra innings in a doubleheader on Saturday and 3-0 on Sunday.

UD raised its record to 24-19 overall and 7-7 in the conference. The Hens have three regular season conference games remaining and will play at Towson University on Saturday and Sunday, May 1-2.

The top four teams in the CAA will advance to the conference tournament and with the sweep UD is in contention for a berth. Hofstra leads the conference at 9-3, followed by James Madison at 8-4 and Towson and George Mason at 7-5.

Prior to the Towson series, UD will play a doubleheader at Rider University on Tuesday, April 27, and at Rutgers University on Wednesday, April 28.

In the series against UNC Wilmington, UD freshman Carolynn Sloat fired shutouts in the first and third games. She has now compiled 15 wins, tops in the CAA, and is only the third player in Hen history to reach that mark, joining Kristi O’Connell and Susan Dugan.

Sloat’s 22 complete games are two off the single season record held by O’Connell. She has an earned run average of just 1.39.

Sloat allowed just four hits in the opening game victory. Laurie Erickson gave UD a 1-0 lead in the second inning when she scored on a wild pitch.

The Hens scored again in the fifth when Randi Isaacs singled home Kelly Pastic.

In the second game, UD pitcher Jenn Joseph (8-5) went the distance in a 10-inning victory, scattering seven hits and striking out five batters.

The Hens won when Isaacs hits an infield single that scored Michelle Plant.

On Sunday, Sloat allowed seven hits but no runs to complete the series sweep. Laura Streets had a hit and two runs scored.
