Delaware softball team ends Hofstra winning streak

Liz Winslow’s hit helped the Hens defeat Hofstra.
10:45 a.m., April 12, 2004--The University of Delaware softball team handed Hofstra University its first conference loss at home since 2001 with a dramatic 4-2 victory in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

The game was the finale of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series. Hofstra won 4-3 on Friday and 6-1 in the first game of the doubleheader.

The Pride had won 31 straight conference games at its home field in Hempstead, N.Y., including 21 as a member of the CAA.

In the second game Saturday, UD was down 2-0 after Hofstra scored single runs in the first and third innings.

The Hens got on the board in the fifth when Jenn Joseph and Lauren Gardner reached bases on errors. Freshman Michelle Plant ripped a double to left, which scored Joseph, and one out later Laura Streets smacked an RBI single to right field to tie the game.

The game remained deadlocked 2-2 until the 10th when Plant led off with a single. After a pop out, Streets ripped a double down the right field line to put runners at second and third.

Hofstra pitcher Callie Osborne got the second out on an infield grounder but Winslow then hit a single to center, plating both runners.

UD freshman pitcher Carolynn Sloat then retired the Pride in order in the bottom of the 10th to earn the victory, her 11th of the season, which ties a school record for wins by a freshman held by Kristi O’Connell (1997) and Kathy Tucci (1987).

UD (18-15 overall, 3-5 in the CAA) will travel to Rider University for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m., Wednesday, April 14.
