Delaware softball team splits series with Drexel 11:54 a.m., April 5, 2004--The University of Delaware softball team split a doubleheader at Drexel University on Saturday, winning the first game 3-1 but losing the second 3-2. The third game of the weekend series to have been played Sunday was canceled due to inclement weather. With the split, UD is now 17-13 overall and 2-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Fightin Blue Hens will next play a conference series at Hofstra University with a single game scheduled at noon, Friday, April 9, and a doubleheader beginning at noon, Saturday, April 10. In Saturdays opening game victory, UD freshman pitcher Carolynn Sloat won her 10th game of the season, and Randi Isaacs hit her third home run of the year. Sloat is one win away from the school record for wins by a freshman held by Kristi O'Connell and Kathi Tucci. Sloat had an opportunity to earn her 11th in relief in the nightcap but took the loss to fall to 10-8 on the season. Isaacs staked UD to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when she hit a three-run home run. In the nightcap, UD took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Laura Streets. Drexel took a 2-1 lead in the second inning off UD starter Jenn Joseph. The Dragons took advantage of an error, a walk, an infield single and a sacrifice fly to take the lead. UD tied the game 2-2 in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by Jenny Gilkins but the Hens stranded runners at second and third when Drexel pitcher Amanda Heyser retired the last two batters on a strikeout and a ground out. Drexel regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a pinch-hit RBI double by Erin McKee off of Sloat, who relieved Joseph in the third inning. Heyser retired the Blue Hens in order in the seventh to earn the complete game win. UD senior Liz Winslow extended her hitting streak to nine games. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
