Blue Hen softball team sweeps LaSalle University

10:39 a.m., March 15, 2004--The University of Delaware softball team swept LaSalle University in a doubleheader played Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens won 6-2 and 7-2 to improve to 12-6 on the season. UD has a six-game winning streak.

UD will host the University of Pennsylvania at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 17.

The Hens will then participate in the Mizuno Bash at the Beach tournament to be hosted by Delaware State University March 19-21 at Lewes.

In Saturday’s game, UD second baseman Jenny Gilkins and shortstop Michelle Plant led the way with four hits in the two games.

Plant, a freshman, had two hits in each game, including a two-run double in the opener.

Gilkins collected three of her four hits in the opener and had two runs scored and an RBI single in UD’s five-run sixth inning in the nightcap.

In the opener, Plant's two-run double gave the Hens a 2-1 lead in the second inning.

La Salle tied the game in the fourth, but UD responded with three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. The Hens took advantage of three La Salle errors in the fifth inning and got an RBI double by senior Laura Streets in the sixth.

UD pitcher Jenn Joseph got the win, raising her record to 5-1.

In the nightcap, UD pushed a run across in the first inning on a passed ball and took a 2-0 lead in the fifth when Streets drove in a run. The Hens blew the game open with five runs in the sixth inning, capped by a two-run double by Streets.

UD pitcher Carolyn Sloat earned the win in the nightcap, raising her record to 7-4.
