Delaware softball team defeats Bucknell 6-2

10:51 a.m., March 8, 2004--The host University of Delaware softball team scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to defeat Bucknell University 6-2 on Saturday afternoon.

UD pitcher Carolyn Sloat struck out eight batters to pick up the win in a game that was to have been the opening contest of a doubleheader. The second game was delayed by lightning, then called off due to darkness with the Fightin’ Blue Hens holding a 3-0 lead.

With the victory, the Hens improved to 8-6 on the season.

UD will host the University of Maryland Baltimore County in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 9, at Delaware Field.

In Saturday’s game, UD trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the fourth inning but scored four runs on four hits to take the lead.

UD second baseman Jenny Gilkins got things going when she singled to center field. Left fielder Tara Nieves then walked.

Shortstop Michelle Plant, who drove in three runs on the day, singled to left field to send Gilkins home and then pinch hitter Liz Winslow singled to score Nieves.

The inning’s big hit was a double by third baseman Laura Streets that scored Plant and Kelley Pastic, who had come in to the game to pinch run for Winslow.

Sloat (5-4) picked up her fifth win of the season, posting eight strikeouts and allowing only two runs on nine hits.
