Delaware track star Smith receives NCAA scholarship
Smith, who earned a UD bachelors degree in behavior management and sport management in May, is one of 16 women nationwide selected for this years award. She plans to attend graduate school at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, where she will study sport management. Smith earned eight varsity letters as a sprinter and hurdler for UD Head Coach Sue McGrath-Powell's indoor and outdoor track and field teams. She served as a co-captain during her senior year and holds eight school records, including individual indoors marks in the 400 meters (56.83) and 500 meters (1:15.70). Smith carried a 3.642 grade point average and was named first team College Sports Information Directors of America District 2 All-Academic for 2004. The NCAA enhancement scholarships are designed to create better opportunities for women and ethnic minorities in coaching, athletics administration, officiating and athletics support services. The recipients are women who have completed an undergraduate degree and are seeking admission or have been accepted into an NCAA member institution's sports administration or related program that will assist the applicant in obtaining a career in athletics. Selection is made by the members of the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics and the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee, and is based on involvement in extracurricular activities, course work, commitment to the pursuit of a career in intercollegiate athletics and promise for success in that career. In addition to Smith, NCAA scholarships were awarded to: Karla Adelt (Kentucky), Melissa Bickett (Michigan), Jennifer Carow (Florida), Kimberly Faust (Frostburg State), Patrice Feulner (Arizona State), Monica Garza (Tarleton State), Elena Jelsing (St. Benedict), Victoria Lamb (Louisiana-Monroe), Tonya Rasor (Florida State), Teresa Ann Resch (Augustana), Megan Valentine (Medaille College), Tabitha Washington (College of Charleston), Sarah Caldwell (Emory & Henry), Lisa Marie Grege (St. Benedict) and Heather Reader (Washington College).
