UD lacrosse midfielder is CAA Rookie of Week
Smith, a freshman, played an important role in UDs 13-8 victory over host Sacred Heart University that earned the Fightin Blue Hens a berth in the CAA championship tournament. In that game, Smith won 19 of 24 face-offs, collected 14 ground balls and scored a goal. Smith scored during a pivotal 6-0 run that erased a 3-1 Sacred Heart lead. Smith ranks second in the CAA in ground balls, with six per game, and in face-offs, winning 62.2 percent. This is the fifth time a UD player has been named the conferences top rookie. Freshman Cam Howard has earned the honor four times. UD will host the University of Denver, ranked No. 15 in NCAA Division I, at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 1, at Rullo Stadium. The game is the annual Delaware Lacrosse Foundation Game and Milt Roberts Day Game. For the first time since it joined the conference, UD has earned a trip to the CAA tournament. The Hens will play in the semifinals on Wednesday, May 5, at Villanova University. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
