Sports Illustrated highlights Fightin’ Blue Hens

3:47 p.m., Sept. 11, 2003--The Sept. 15 issue of Sports Illustrated takes a look at University of Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens football as the magazine celebrates its 50th anniversary by featuring sports in all 50 states.

The Delaware section kicks off with a large photograph of UD mascot YoUDee, cheerleaders and student fans. The main article about the success and tradition of the UD football program is written by University alumnus Jeff Pearlman.

The section also features an essay on the Blue-Gold All-Star Football Game, which features the best of the state’s high school athletes, by Pat Williams, senior vice president of the Orlando Magic.

A poll of state sports fans finds UD football to be the favorite college team by a wide margin over Penn State and Notre Dame, and Blue Hen quarterback Rich Gannon, now of the Oakland Raiders and the reigning National Football League Most Valuable Player, the greatest athlete who ever lived in or played for a team in Delaware.

The Greatest Moment section features a photograph from the University Archives of Blue Hen back Vern Roberts eluding a Temple University tackler in 1972 and Tubby Raymond being carried off the field after a victory.

The Sports Illustrated online site has additional information, including a list of the top 50 Delaware sports figures, in which a number of persons with UD ties are highlighted. Raymond is ranked No. 4.
